Napoleon had dominated continental Europe for nearly twenty years when he was defeated in the spring of 1814 and sent to exile on Elba. In less than a year, however, he escaped his island home in the Mediterranean and returned to France. Landing near Cannes, he was met by ecstatic French people. He marched north, gathering military as he went so that within a month, he had chased the French Bourbon king, Louis XVIII (Louis XVI's brother) from the country. He then posed a major threat to all of Europe as he attempted to re-establish his empire and wipe out national boundaries. Gathering remnants of his general staff to him, he marched north into Belgium.
By June, the allies had chosen the British Duke of Wellington as their commander and had amassed a huge force on the plains in Belgium and northern France.
Knowing that a major showdown would occur soon, both sides girded for a bloody battle.
